Bixby Canyon Bridge

One of my favorite parts of driving down Highway 1 on the coast is getting into Big Sur and crossing the Bixby bridge, named after Charles Henry Bixby who settled in 1868. It is one of the tallest single span concrete bridges in the world and also one of the most popular bridges on the Pacific to be photographed.

The bridge opened in 1932 and was made out of concrete to reduce the material costs to be able to pay workers more during the Depression and also mimicked the natural landscape of the rocks. It opened up access for the residents of Big Sur and beyond for more timely travel along the coastline rather than having to go inward as previously needed.
