The tower that launched Dell and singer Daniel Johnston...

An influence on Tom Waits, singer Daniel Johnston, who just passed away, like Shania Twain got discovered while working at McDonald's.

Johnston in 1983 worked at the Dobie Center location of McD at University of Texas. A residence with a mall.

Johnston would introduce himself to every customer and gave out free tapes of Hi, How Are You? (1983).

That made him a local favorite but nearly got him fired.

However, as his local fame rose his hours got extended in 1984.

Michael Dell started Dell in RM 2713 at Dobie Center around this time. Dell dropped out in 1984

1990 grad Wes Anderson worked at Dobie Theatre here. Jeb Bush once lived here.

In 1992, Kurt Cobain wore a shirt promoting Hi, How Are You? (1983) at the MTV Video Music Awards.

In 1993, Sound Exchange (2100 Guadalupe) asked Johnston to paint a mural for Hi, How Are You? (1983). The mural still survives long after the record store closed in 2003. In 2018, a Thai restaurant moved in called Thai, How Are You?
