My husband is a paramedic and sometimes during our travels he is called upon to help out when someone is injured. Even if the situation is well in hand we always dwell a moment to make sure he can't help in anyway. On this occasion we were at the top of Mt Vesuvius and this poor lady had simply stumbled on the loose gravel pathway. My husband suspects she had broken her hip. Her family quickly alerted the authorities. Because the ambulance couldn't make it up the very steep hill the paramedics were brought up in a typically small Italian car. Unfortunately the small Italian car was also the only way back down the mountain - so she was loaded into the back of the vehicle for a very bumpy and scarily precipitous trip - after administration of a generous dose of pain relief we hope. You may have seen some of our other ambulance photos from around the world - this is one of our more unusual ones. Please be assured that we weren't being voyeuristic - just such an amazing scene.
