If you wander along Dubai Creek, you'll see these huge traditional wooden boats getting loaded with cargo to be transported over the sea to Iran, Oman, India and beyond. They're called dhows, and there is one shipbuilding company left in Dubai that specializes in building and repairing them. We roamed around the grounds on the weekend, after asking if we could enter since it's behind a gate, and it was quite fascinating seeing the boats in various stages of construction. Another surprise: the builders had a herd of goats skittering around the site (something I've seen in more rural parts of the UAE, but never right in the middle of Dubai).
Click over to Satellite View, and you'll see how there are a bunch of boat hulls on the shore where I've left the note.
