River Guadiana, enclosed by the Alqueva Dam, is the first place in the world to receive the Starlight Tourism Destination certification due to being a wonderful place to see the stars, constellations and distant galaxies such as the Milky Way. One way to enjoy the sights is in cruising on the Westlander, a sailing barge built in Holland in 1913. The boat is a beauty and sails for those looking to stargaze or just enjoy an afternoon with friends on the water. Trips include snacks, lunches, romantic dinners, birthday parties, and weddings. The owner also owns the Sem-Fim, an old olive oil pressing room turned restaurant. The boat ride is a wonderful way to explore the lake and the restaurant is a delicious way to taste some of the best flavors of the region.
