I got to spend a week with Cooperative for Education (CoEd), a non-profit organization that has been working to help provide educational resources and opportunities to poor communities in Guatemala that are lacking in this. The organization doesn't just come in and give, but rather empowers local community representatives and trains and educates them so that they can work and help to bring their own people up from poverty through education. The stories I have from touring schools, and talking to families and students, as well as CoEd staff has left me changed forever.
CoEd offers "Snapshot Tours" which are tours designed to provide a travel experience through Guatemala that exposes you to the reality faced by many there, the work that CoEd and their team and partners are doing, and to hopefully show you, as well as inspire you to give better.
If you are ever interested in really getting to know Guatemala's heart and soul, this is one of the best ways to do it. The families will steal your heart.
