Who knew the delicious little mai tai was created just outside my front door?!? In 1934, Vic “The Trader” Bergeron, opened a cozy little bar in Oakland called Hinky Dinks, though after an adventure in bartending in Cuba, Vic was hooked on rum. Upon his return he reinvented Hinky Dinks with a tiki theme decor with exotic cocktails and serving some of the first “fusion” food around all under the new roof of Trader Vic’s. In 1974, Trader Vic’s relocated just down the way to the sleepy Emeryville Marina that overlooks the Bay. Vic claims to have created the Mai Tai in 1944, though it’s debatable as competitor Don the Beachcomber claims to have created it in 1933. The story goes that the Trader made it one afternoon for some friends who were visiting from Tahiti. One of those friends, Carrie Guild, tasted it and cried out "Maita'i roa ae!", literally meaning “very good”. And thus, the Mai Tai was born.
