A few student of mine the other week told me about a crazy party they had been to the night before that was in a weird old mansion that used to be a bordello that Jack London frequented. This house was a combination of the Winchester Mystery House and a circus fun house. There were skinny stairwells that opened up into rooms with old stained glass and mahogany saloon. There were tiny doors that lead to a massive dance party. This place is known as The Bordello. I couldn't find much else about this spot online besides all the mystery and lore surrounding the mansion believed to be built in the 1880s.
It had a good run as being the best underground rave around from 1985-1992, known as Mr. Floppy's Flophouse where the rule was "Don't do anything to interfere with anyone's good time, including your own." The man who kept it alive during this time was George Dodridge Rowan Jr. who was known to appear in a wizard costume behind his piano from time to time and serve up cup-a-noodles to weary partiers. All internet research has lead me to believe that this underground venue has been closed for years but if I'm ever feeling brave (and young enough) I know that it's just back on the underground circuit.
