In front of a packed audience, including the likes of Sammy Davis Jr. and Jimi Hendrix, Cass Elliot gave the worst performance of her career. She was barely audible. People noisily walked out.
It was 1968. She had just released her first solo album Dream a Little Dream of Me. Six months before her debut, Elliot went on a crash diet, shaving 100 pounds off of her 300 pound figure. As a side effect, she developed a stomach ulcer and throat problems.
That was only the beginning.
Rehearsals started three weeks before the show opened, but Elliot was confined to her bed. Finally, she came to rehearsal three days before the show, but only made it part way through. Her voice was falling apart. In an attempt to save her voice, she didn't come to the final two rehearsals.
On the night of the show, Elliot developed a fever. Backstage, she stood nervously among flowers from many famous well-wishers, determined to go on. The show closed after opening night.
