Alejandro Iñarittu, the director of so many great movies from Amores Perros, to Babel, to Birdman, was honored for his achievements at the Sundance Gala in Culver City. He spoke of the importance of art and culture in a world which sorely needs it. "We have to protect the importance of culture. Art is created because the world is not perfect.”

Sundance Directors Lab

I just joined the board of the Sundance Institute and came to the Director's Lab in the beautiful mountains of Utah. These are the editing suites where the eight directors chosen for the program edit their scenes. You can't imagine a more inspiring place.

Robert Redford and Michelle Satter started the Directors Lab in 1981. It is the heart of the Institute's work. The famous Sundance Film Festival in Park City, for which the Institute is best known, came later.
