Chasing Thieves (1 of 3)

One of the first weekends I lived in San Francisco, there was a commotion on the bus as it neared this stop. A pickpocket had snagged someone’s wallet!

A few of us getting off the stop chased the suspect as he fled down Church. I cut through the Safeway parking lot instead and headed him off at the pass, where he ditched the wallet (contents intact) and I retrieved it.

A few of the other passengers grabbed him and someone called the police. But while we waited for the police to arrive he kept alternately trying to break away and describe the hard times he was going through. Being that the rest of us were headed to a night out in the Castro, the race/class dichotomy started to make everyone a little uncomfortable and finally they let him go.
