Franklin Albert Jones got a bachelor's degree from Columbia University and a master's from Stanford University, then traveled to India and had a vision that he was divine. He started a cult in California, and in 1983 moved 40 of his wives and closest followers to an island he bought in Fiji. A man who used to be captain of a boat that ferried people to and from the island said that he wasn't allowed on shore, but one time he snuck on at night and saw, as it was described to me, "topless young women dancing around a throned Jabba the Hut". Jones changed his name many times, but eventually settled on Adi Da, Sanskrit for "first giver." Ironically, it also means something in Fijian: Queen of Shit.
