Fort Bragg, California, United States

Glass Beach

Glass Beach, existing just off of Highway 1, originally was referred to as The Dumps for the residents of Fort Bragg who simply threw their trash over the cliffs.

In 1967, the North Coast Water Quality Board closed the area to start a series of cleanups to preserve the area. Most large items were removed; however, the shards of glass were left behind that that the ocean has so graciously tuned into an array of smooth glass stones.

Glass Beach was purchased by California State Parks in October 2002 and is now accessible from MacKerricher State Park.
