Until very recently, there was a semi-derelict old art deco building here. The former Dobbins fabric store had recently housed a second-hand clothes shop on the bottom floor, but it was badly damaged by a fire in April and was later demolished.
In its place has appeared this, a car park. There are lots of these on empty brown field sites in Manchester, much to the irritation of city centre residents who'd rather see a bit more green instead. A group of them held a protest here in May, taking over six of the bays and turning them into a makeshift park. They refer to these as "zombie car parks". I agree with them it would be nice if this and other similar spaces were used a bit more imaginatively.
