Taberna da Poncha is a small pub about 20-minute-drive from the capital Funchal. The floors are covered with peanut shells, and the walls with business cards left by visitors from around Europe, and the world. This is the place to stop for Madeira's famous drink, Poncha. Poncha is made with Aguardente de cana (distilled alcohol made from sugar cane juice), honey, sugar, lemon rind and lemon juice. It is all mixed together in a pitcher with a muddler created in Madeira called mexelote. The taste is sweet, it's like punch, but quite not as sweet. It's also doesn't have the strong alcohol taste, but you might want to sip carefully, this sweet drink has a kick to it.
