Prometheus

Prometheus was a very old Great Basin Bristlecone Pine tree (Pinus longaeva). It was believed to be about 4862 years old when it was cut down in 1964 by a graduate student and United States Forest Service personnel for research purposes. The people involved did not know how old the tree was before cutting it down.

The tree was named after Prometheus, a mythological figure who stole fire from the gods and gave it to man.
