The majestic Lake Atitlan in Guatemala is surrounded by three active volcanos and is the deepest lake in Central America. Lake Atitlan is one of the most beautiful lakes in then world and was formed by the eruption of the three volcanos. It does not flow into the ocean but into two nearby rivers. The lake has a natural cyclical rise and fall and the lake has recently risen almost 12 feet in the last few years. So many of the docks to access the villages are literally underwater, even our hotels main entrance was under water! They have to keep building docks up on higher ground with the rise of the water, but one tour guide told us that eventually the water will come back down again.
