Spring Breakup

I was driving from Main Brook, to Hay Cove Newfoundland today and came across this pond. The water had burst through the culvert in the highway. I was fascinated by the shapes and colours in the ice. I stopped to take a picture. The images were one reward but the greatest reward was the memories that came back to me. Memories of spring breakup in the Cypress Hills of Saskatchewan. The sounds of ice rattling on the tree branches as they shook in the breeze. The creaking and crackling as water rushed out leaving the ice unsupported. The splash as chunks would break off into the stream flowing swiftly to the culvert. (Culvert is a large round metal tube that is entrenched in the road bed to allow water to flow through. Culverts take the place of bridges in some areas.)
